WASHINGTON DOG PARK

Why a dog park?

Dog parks provide a great recreational activity for people of all ages. Because the cost of construction and maintenance is relatively low, a dog park is an easy and cost-effective addition to any major park. Dog parks provide a place for dogs to exercise off leash and an opportunity for people with common interests to connect with each other.

Why Washington Park, and why this location in Washington Park?

Washington Park is centrally located and is one of Springfield’s oldest and most popular parks. The location selected is in an underutilized portion of the park. The selected area has a gentle slope and beautiful shade trees. There is also parking nearby and ready access to water.

How will it be funded?

The dog park will be privately funded through the Springfield Parks Foundation with 20% of fundraising set aside for maintenance.

Would George Washington have approved?

There is a wonderful historical connection between George Washington and dogs. We would love to share some of the stories about George and his dogs on signage within the dog park. It would be fun to have a façade of Mount Vernon, historical plantings of serviceberry trees like those George planted at Mount Vernon, and at some point perhaps a statute of George and one of his dogs. It would also be fun to have the children of Springfield name the dog park after one of George’s dogs (Sweet Lips, Venus, True Love, Taster, Scentwell, Vulcan, and Tippler to name a few).

What will be included in the design plans for the dog park?

We plan for park benches, waste cans, plastic bags, watering stations, and a potential agility course. We do not plan for any shelters but will make use of the shade trees. We anticipate that the dog park would only be open during daylight hours. Click here for location/layout map and information.
